Trademark, Patent and Design Protection in Türkiye for Chinese Companies

Chinese companies usually protect trademarks in Türkiye by designating Türkiye in a Madrid international registration filed through CNIPA, or by a national filing through a Turkish attorney. Inventions reach Türkiye through the PCT national phase, and designs through the Hague System or a national filing. We handle the Turkish side and report to you in Chinese through our translators.

Which version of the mark to protect

Turkish consumers read Latin script. A mark registered only in Chinese characters may not protect the brand name customers actually see. Most Chinese brands protect the Latin-script version, and the Chinese characters where they appear on products.

Madrid or national filing

China and Türkiye are both members of the Madrid System, so a Chinese application or registration can be extended to Türkiye. A national filing through a Turkish attorney can be faster to adjust if TÜRKPATENT raises objections. We help you choose for each mark.

Patents and designs

China and Türkiye are both PCT members: a Chinese PCT application enters the Turkish national phase within 30 months of priority. Since 2022 China is also a member of the Hague System for designs.

Bad-faith filings

If a third party has filed your brand in Türkiye, the application can be opposed within two months of publication, and a registration filed in bad faith can be challenged in court. A trademark watch tells you about such filings in time.

Frequently asked questions

Should a Chinese company register its mark in Chinese or in Latin script in Türkiye?

Usually the Latin-script brand name customers see in Türkiye, and the Chinese characters as well where they appear on the products. We check both in the Turkish register.

Can a Chinese Madrid registration cover Türkiye?

Yes. Türkiye can be designated in a Madrid international registration based on a Chinese application or registration.

Someone filed our brand in Türkiye before us. What can we do?

If the application is still in its two-month publication period, we can oppose it. A registration filed in bad faith can be challenged in court, where clients are represented by lawyers.
