International Application from Turkey
European Patents and the Unitary Patent
A European patent application at the European Patent Office (EPO) leads to one examination for up to 39 member states, including Türkiye. After grant, you can request a Unitary Patent for the participating EU member states and validate the patent in the other countries you need. We plan the route, coordinate the EPO procedure with our partner European patent attorneys and handle Türkiye ourselves.
At a glance
- Who it is for
- Turkish inventors and companies seeking protection in Europe, and foreign owners covering Europe and Türkiye together.
- What we do
- Route planning, EPO filing and prosecution through partner attorneys, Unitary Patent requests and national validations, including Türkiye.
- What you send us
- The invention description, any earlier Turkish or PCT application and the countries of interest.
- Timeline
- A European patent lasts up to 20 years from filing; unitary effect is requested within one month of grant.
How it works
Route
We compare EPO, PCT and national routes for your countries and budget.
Filing
The application is filed at the EPO directly or from a PCT application, through our partner attorney.
Examination
We coordinate search, examination and the replies with you and our partner.
After grant
We request unitary effect where useful and validate in Türkiye and other states.
One examination, many countries
The EPO examines the application once. After grant, the European patent becomes a bundle of national rights in the states where it is validated. Third parties can oppose the granted patent at the EPO within nine months of grant.
The Unitary Patent
Since June 2023, a European patent can be given unitary effect in the EU member states that take part in the Unified Patent Court system. It is requested within one month of the publication of the mention of grant and gives one right, one renewal fee and one court for those states.
Türkiye and the other non-unitary states
Türkiye, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and EU states outside the system are not covered by the Unitary Patent. They are validated separately; we handle the Turkish validation directly.
Planning costs over time
The choice between unitary effect and national validations affects renewal fees for up to 20 years. We set out the options in our written quote before each step.
