Protecting Your Trademark, Patent or Design in Türkiye from Abroad
Foreign companies protect trademarks, patents and designs in Türkiye either by filing directly at TÜRKPATENT through a registered Turkish attorney, or by extending an international filing: a Madrid designation for trademarks, a PCT national phase entry or a European patent validation for inventions, and a Hague designation for designs. This guide explains which route fits, what we need from you and what happens after filing.

Do you need a Turkish attorney?
Applicants without a residence or establishment in Türkiye act before TÜRKPATENT through a registered Turkish trademark or patent attorney. This applies to national filings and to answering a provisional refusal of an international registration designating Türkiye.
Choosing the route
- Trademarks: a national application in Türkiye, or a designation of Türkiye in a Madrid international registration.
- Patents: a national application, the national phase of a PCT application, or the validation of a European patent, since Türkiye is a member of the European Patent Convention.
- Designs: a national application or a designation of Türkiye under the Hague System.
An EU trade mark, an EU design and the Unitary Patent do not cover Türkiye, which is not an EU member state.
Language
National applications are filed in Turkish. We prepare the Turkish list of goods and services, the Turkish patent translation and all filings, and report to you in English, French or Turkish, or in Russian or Chinese through translators.
After filing
Trademark applications are examined and published in the Official Trademark Bulletin, where third parties have two months to oppose. A registered trademark must be put to genuine use in Türkiye within five years of registration, otherwise it can be revoked for non-use. Patents and utility models are kept in force with annual fees.

Frequently asked questions
Can a foreign company file a trademark in Türkiye directly?
A foreign applicant without a residence or establishment in Türkiye files through a registered Turkish trademark attorney, either nationally or by designating Türkiye in a Madrid international registration.
Does an EU trade mark or a European patent protect me in Türkiye?
An EU trade mark does not cover Türkiye. A European patent does, once it is validated in Türkiye within three months of the mention of grant.
What happens if Türkiye refuses my Madrid designation?
TÜRKPATENT issues a provisional refusal. The answer must be filed through a registered Turkish trademark attorney within the period stated in the refusal; we review the grounds and prepare the response.
