Turkish IP Glossary: Trademark, Patent and Design Terms
TÜRKPATENT decisions, bulletins and certificates are in Turkish. This glossary gives the Turkish terms you will meet most often in trademark, patent and design matters, with their English equivalent and a one-line explanation.

| Marka | Trademark | A sign that distinguishes the goods or services of one business from those of others. |
| Marka başvurusu | Trademark application | The filing that starts the registration procedure. |
| Resmi Marka Bülteni | Official Trademark Bulletin | Where applications are published; the two-month opposition period starts on publication. |
| Yayına itiraz | Opposition | An objection to a published application by the owner of an earlier right. |
| Yeniden İnceleme ve Değerlendirme Kurulu (YİDK) | Re-examination and Evaluation Board | The TÜRKPATENT board that decides appeals against the office's decisions. |
| Kullanmama nedeniyle iptal | Non-use revocation | Cancellation of a mark not genuinely used for five years, decided by TÜRKPATENT. |

| Yenileme | Renewal | Extending a registration for a further period. |
| Devir | Assignment | Transfer of a right to a new owner. |

| Vekaletname | Power of attorney | The document that authorises an attorney to act for you. |
| Marka vekili / patent vekili | Trademark attorney / patent attorney | A professional registered with TÜRKPATENT to represent clients before it. |
| Patent | Patent | Protection for a new, inventive and industrially applicable invention, up to 20 years. |
| Faydalı model | Utility model | Protection for a new and industrially applicable invention, up to 10 years. |
| Yenilik | Novelty | The requirement that the invention or design was not available to the public before filing. |
| Buluş basamağı | Inventive step | The requirement that the invention is not obvious to a person skilled in the field. |
| Araştırma raporu / inceleme raporu | Search report / examination report | The office's reports on prior art and on patentability. |
| Yıllık ücret | Annual fee | The yearly payment that keeps a patent or utility model in force. |
| Tasarım tescili | Design registration | Protection for the appearance of a product, 5 years renewable up to 25. |
| Coğrafi işaret | Geographical indication | A name that links a product to the place it comes from. |
| Nice sınıflandırması | Nice Classification | The international classes of goods and services used in trademark filings. |
| Rüçhan hakkı | Priority right | The right to rely on the date of an earlier filing abroad. |

Frequently asked questions
Are TÜRKPATENT documents issued in English?
No. Decisions, bulletins and certificates are issued in Turkish. We explain them and report to you in English, French or Turkish, or in Russian or Chinese through translators.
What is the difference between a marka vekili and an avukat?
A marka vekili is a trademark attorney registered with TÜRKPATENT to act before the office. An avukat is a lawyer, who conducts court proceedings.
